The method

How to maximize your vacation days

Whether you call it annual leave, vacation or PTO, the trick is the same: spend leave on the working days next to time you already have off. BridgeDays does the arithmetic.

  1. Pick your country, and your state, province or region where holidays differ.
  2. Enter how many days of leave you have and choose the year: 2026, 2027 or 2028.
  3. Choose the kind of time off you want: several proper breaks of at least five days, one long trip, or the most days off in total, even if that means a string of long weekends.
  4. Read the answer. BridgeDays works out the best possible plan, not a rough guess, and shows the breaks, the exact dates to request and the whole year as a calendar.
  5. Adjust it. Tap a working day to fix it into the plan or rule it out, and the plan works itself out again. Then copy the link or save the dates to your calendar.
In plain words

What is a bridge day?

A bridge day is a working day between a public holiday and a weekend. Book it as leave and the holiday and the weekend join into one longer break. When a holiday falls on a Thursday, taking the Friday off turns one day of leave into four days off.

In Romania the government also declares extra bridge days by decision, sometimes only weeks ahead. Those cannot be predicted, so they are not included.

Example: Romania in 2026

With 21 days of leave in Romania in 2026, BridgeDays turns 21 leave days into 54 days off across 6 breaks. One of them: book Wednesday 2 to Friday 4 December. Those three days join Saint Andrew's Day on Monday 30 November, National Day on Tuesday 1 December and the weekends either side into nine days off, from Saturday 28 November to Sunday 6 December.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What are the best days to take off work in 2027?

The working days that sit between a public holiday and a weekend, because each one joins days you already have off. Which days those are depends on your country and region, so choose them, enter your allowance and pick 2027. BridgeDays lists the exact dates to request.

How many days off can I get from my leave?

It depends on where the holidays fall in your country. As a guide, 21 leave days in Romania in 2026 become 54 days off in six proper breaks, or 74 days off if you only want the highest total, mostly as long weekends. The plan also shows what each extra day of leave adds.

Does it work in the US, UK, Canada and Australia?

Yes. All four are among the eleven countries checked by hand, with holidays by state, nation or province: UK bank holidays for England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and Canadian holidays for Ontario or any other province, for example. Substitute bank holidays and US observed days are included.

Can I add my time off to Google Calendar or Outlook?

Yes. BridgeDays saves a standard .ics calendar file, which Google Calendar, Outlook and Apple Calendar can all import. Save one event per break, or one event per booked day for HR systems that count days.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no email and no cookies. The calculation runs in your browser and the plan lives in the page address, so a copied link shares the exact plan and nothing about your leave is sent anywhere. It keeps working offline once loaded.

Can it plan around a four-day week or a leave year that starts in April?

Yes. In the options you can set which days you work, move the start of your leave year, rule out days you cannot take, add your birthday if your employer gives it, and get a day back when a holiday falls on a weekend.

How accurate are the holiday dates?

They come from the open source date-holidays library and ship with the app, and eleven countries have been checked by hand. Governments do move holidays or add them at short notice, so check anything that matters against an official calendar and your own contract before you book.
